25 – California to Oshkosh Family Adventure

This episode is a story of a family trip to Oshkosh AirVenture, a very unique family trip to Oshkosh.

James Good lives in California, and he, his wife and son went to Oshkosh AirVenture 2019. While that is certainly special, what’s unique about their story is that James flew his two seat 1948 Ercoupe, while his wife and son made the trip in their car and met him at his stops along the way.

What an unforgettable family vacation!

James chronicled this trip on his YouTube channel (link below) – you should check it out!

So about two years after he got his pilot’s license, James landed at Oshkosh in his own airplane (a classic vintage airplane at that), flying it all the way from California with his wife and son joining him along the way.

If that wasn’t enough, James’ aviation story also has connections to pilots of a Tiger Moth, a Luscombe, and the U2.

You are in for a treat with this episode!

23 – Airplane Builder

We talk with Vans RV-9A builder Aitor Lazo, catching him at his first trip to Oshkosh AirVenture.

How did Aitor decide to build an RV-9A? In addition to sharing that back story with us, he goes beyond the rivets and wing ribs of this kitplane.

He also shares some of the special interactions he’s had with people that he’s met through his airplane building project, especially through his EAA Chapter and social media. He is clearly grateful for the help and advice he has received along the way, and humbled that people who are thinking about building an airplane have reached out to him.

It was a lot of fun to meet Aitor and get to visit with him at Oshkosh. He’s a superb example of how great the aviation community is.

You can follow Aitor and his progress on his RV-9A build project on Instagram @airplanebuilder!

22 – Sport Pilot Flies to Oshkosh (2018)

We talk with Joey Shreve, who’s a relatively new Sport Pilot. Joey flew in to Airventure Oshkosh 2018 for the first time in his 1946 Ercoupe 415-C.

Talking with Joey is a fantastic example of how Oshkosh is more than airplanes. There’s so many interesting people to meet there too!

Joey shares his adventure of flying from Ohio to Oshkosh, which was his longest flight as a pilot. He also talks about the great parking spot he got with his plane, the people he met, the fun things he saw, the cool aviation items he bought…and…what “puddle jumping for pie” means.

Interview recorded July 2018.

21 – 11,898 Miles to Oshkosh

If you’ve experienced Airventure Oshkosh before, you might have heard some stories of the long distances people have traveled to get there.

Well, I’ve never heard of a longer distance than what Glen Towler traveled: 11,898 miles.

Glen is from New Zealand, and on this episode we talk about a lot of interesting things: what aviation is like in New Zealand, about some of his aviation interests and experiences, and how aviation podcasts and aviation social media can make some unique connections, and some new friends.

I met Glen a few years ago in Camp Scholler, and he’s a great example of the interesting people you can meet in aviation, in some cases, literally from the other side of the world.

20 – Cherokees to Oshkosh

One of the many amazing things to see at AirVenture Oshkosh are the “mass arrivals”. The large group arrivals of one type of aircraft.

One of those mass arrivals involves Piper Cherokees. They even have a group called “Cherokees to Oshkosh”, and I was fortunate to view part of a “mini-clinic”. A “mini-clinic” is a required training session on the formation procedures and flying required to participate in the Cherokees to Oshkosh mass arrival.

It’s quite a site to see a mass arrival at Oshkosh but it’s quite an eye opener to learn how the Cherokees to Oshkosh formation flying comes together, and how people like Dwane Ferguson, also known as “Ferg”, are a big part of how this comes together.

At these mini-clinics Ferg shares his extensive military formation flying experience for the benefit of Cherokees to Oshkosh.

19 – Aerolite 103

On this episode we spend some time talking about the Aerolite 103, an aircraft that is in the “Part 103” Ultralight world of aviation.

Dennis Carley talks about how much fun the Aerolite 103 is to fly, tells about it’s performance, how you can build it, or even buy it fully assembled and ready to fly.

We also talk about the option of a Magnum Ballistic Parachute system (which can also be used with a number of other aircraft too).

And if you’re already a pilot, Dennis shares what it’s like to make the transition to flying an Aerolite 103.

This episode was recorded in the Ultralight area of AirVenture Oshkosh 2018, so you’ll hear some fun airplane interruptions!

18 – Culver Props – The Story Behind Their Wooden Propellers

Have you ever wondered how a wooden propeller is made? Alaina Lewis from Culver Props will show you how she does it on Facebook and Instagram. In detail. And it’s fascinating.

Alaina is a third generation maker of beautiful wooden propellers for experimental aircraft.

Once you hear this podcast, hear about her family’s aviation history, and see her talented work via her prop-making pictures and videos, I bet you’ll fast become a fan.

And if you’re a fan (and how can you not be), we’ve got Culver Props t-shirts at PreferredAltitude.com!

17 – WWI Replicas to the F-15

An extraordinary range of experiences in aviation!

This is a visit from Sun ‘n Fun 2018 with Retired United States Air Force Colonels Blake and Sandy Thomas. This husband and wife team have built not one, but two replica WWI aircraft together…along with a 200 MPH RV-7.

Amazing, right?

Well, there’s even more.

You’ll also hear how the WWI replica aircraft they’ve built have given them a great appreciation for the sacrifices that have been made for our freedoms, how far we’ve come in aviation, and how they provide a great educational service allowing people to see these unique aircraft as living history.

You’ll also hear about Colonel Blake Thomas’ aviation experiences that have allowed him to fly aircraft from WWI, WWII, Korean, Vietnam, and Gulf War eras. He is one of a handful of people who has flown both the F-86 and the MiG-15.

16 – Aerial Application, Cessna 185, Warbirds and More!

You’re about to hear a conversation with Matt Brignac who talks about some very interesting and unique areas of aviation. Matt’s an Aerial Applicator from Mississippi who also has, as a traveling airplane for him and his family, a Cessna 185 with a belly pod.

We’ll learn about number of things: what people used to call “Crop Dusting” that evolved into Aerial Application, how much Matt and his family can pack into their Cessna 185, and some of Matt’s rewarding Warbirds experiences.

Matt and I spoke during Sun ‘n Fun 2018 under the wing of his 185, and as you might imagine, sometimes the airplane sounds get a bit loud, but please stick with it because Matt’s got some great stories and some great information to share.
