15 – Why We Fly

We talk with Mike Harris of the “Why We Fly” podcast, and we talk about that exact topic. Why do we fly?

We talk about how we can help people, who don’t have much exposure to general aviation, understand how fantastic general aviation is.

This episode was recorded at Sun ‘n Fun 2018 under the wing of Mike’s vintage Piper Tri-Pacer. What you’ll also hear in this episode is a fighter jet, with full afterburners, during the air show, periodically interrupting our conversation.

Sorry about those interruptions, but if you’re listening to an aviation podcast, you’re probably not going to be too upset about that.

14 – Mutt Muffs

If you’re a pilot, and if you have a dog (even if you don’t take your dog flying), you’ve probably noticed a unique product in the aviation world called “Mutt Muffs”. Mutt Muffs are hearing protection for dogs (and cats).

On this episode we visit with Shelly McGuire, the founder of Mutt Muffs. You’ll hear the cool story of how Mutt Muffs came to be in aviation, and the unique products that now go beyond Mutt Muffs.

This interview was recorded at Sun ‘n Fun 2018 in the campground, and to stress the word “fun” in Sun ‘n Fun, you’ll also hear about Shelly’s very unique campsite.

Interview recorded April 2018.

13 – Piper-Stinson

You’ve probably heard of Stinson aircraft before, and you’ve probably heard of Piper aircraft before, but have you ever heard of a Piper-Stinson?

Most people haven’t heard of a Piper-Stinson airplane, and I think you’re going to enjoy learning more about this unique aircraft, and the story behind Mike and Sasha White, the husband and wife who own this special Piper-Stinson.

This episode was recorded at Sun ‘n Fun 2018 in the Vintage Aircraft Camping area, so you’ll hear some fun airplane interruptions too!

And if you’re a Stinson fan, Preferred Altitude, LLC has got great Stinson apparel and gear. Check it out at PreferredAltitude.com!

12 – Aerobatics and US National Aerobatic Competition with Aaron McCartan

There are so many unique stories in our amazing world of aviation, and this episode highlights one of those stories.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Aaron McCartan, a pilot who really enjoys aerobatics.

This interview was recorded in October of 2017, shortly after Aaron had competed in the United States National Aerobatic Championships. The results of that competition become timely now for the 2018 aerobatic season with Aaron’s special role as the US Advanced Aerobatic Team Captain.

You’ll also hear about Aaron’s really interesting aviation background, what he finds special about aerobatics, and about his very unique aerobatic airplane.

I think you’re also going to get something else out of this episode though.

I’ve always thought that aviation is such a unique community, and what I continue to be amazed with is how many unique communities there are within aviation.

After you hear Aaron talk about aerobatics, you might very well be interested in finding out more about this special part of aviation.

11 – Nicholas-Beazley Airplane Company

Have you ever heard of the Nicholas-Beazley Airplane Company before?

Until recently, neither had I, and it may be the most fascinating aviation story I had never heard of.

It’s a very unique aviation story about a small town in Missouri that, for a period of time, was an incredible intersection of aviation involving well known aviation people that created some airplanes that unfortunately ended up being not so well known. Perhaps it was because they were just ahead of their time.

This is a story of not only historic airplanes, but an amazing airplane parts business, a huge flight school for its day, and a community that in recent years came together and created a modern museum to share this surprising chapter in aviation history.

This episode is about the Nicholas-Beazley Airplane Company of Marshall Missouri.

10 – Brodhead Airport’s Kelch Aviation Museum

If you’re into timeless grassroots aviation, you might have heard of a little airport in a small town in southern Wisconsin. Brodhead, Wisconsin.

And if you haven’t heard of Brodhead, Wisconsin, I think you’ll want to listen to this podcast and find out more.

This small airport in this small Wisconsin town could be described as the epicenter for those who love the “golden age” of aviation. It’s considered a home for grass-roots aviation. It’s a place that if you love aviation, once you visit, I think you’ll want to visit again and again.

And like most things in aviation, the people are even more important than the airplanes. In this episode you’ll hear about a couple of Brodhead airport people, a husband and wife, who years ago started acquiring some very unique “golden age” airplanes, and now there is a budding museum in their honor. The Kelch Aviation Museum.

Antique airplanes, vintage airplanes, unique airplanes, airplane restoration, a chili (and ski plane) fly-in, a big pancake breakfast, a fly-in for Pietenpol and Hatz airplane enthusiasts, a fly-in for the Midwest Antique Airplane Club, three grass runways, over 50 hangars, and the Kelch Aviation Museum. All of this unique and timeless aviation in a town of less than 3500 people.

This episode is about the Kelch Aviation Museum and the Brodhead Airport.

09 – Unique and Special Airport in Dickson County Tennessee

In aviation there are so many unique and special airports, and so many unique and special people.

The airport you’ll hear about in this episode is more than airplanes, it’s about building relationships with people.

Walter Ferguson is the Deputy Director of Operations at the Dickson County Municipal Airport in Tennessee. He’s one of the numerous friendly faces that work and fly at this airport that really reinforced with me how there are so many things in aviation and so many people in aviation that are extra special.

Oh, and at the end of this podcast, you are going to hear a VERY unique and special treat…

08 – Hummel Aircraft

If you’re familiar with homebuilt and experimental aircraft you’ve probably heard of the Hummel Bird. It’s definitely a unique aircraft in the history of aviation.

While the Hummel Bird has been around for some time now, Hummel Aviation today actually has a number of aircraft available.

And like so much of aviation, there’s some great stories on how it all came about.

This episode is about Hummel aircraft and Hummel Aviation.

07 – Rotorcraft and the Popular Rotorcraft Association

What’s a gyroplane? How does it relate to Mentone, Indiana? What does PRA stand for?

All of this is yet another depth to unique and timeless aviation, it’s yet another community within aviation, and yet another aviation story that I think you’ll find interesting.

06 – Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing

A B-25 bomber you can actually climb into and get a ride in, an L-17 under restoration, a motorpool of historic military vehicles, a museum of fascinating military artifacts…and more historic airplanes!

On this episode we learn about the Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing, based in South St. Paul at the Fleming Field airport. It’s one of the many local organizations that make up the CAF.

One very important note:

During this episode you’re hear reference to Dick Cole. That’s Lt. Colonel Dick Cole, a veteran of WWII, and a veteran of an incredible chapter of WWII.

He served as one of the “Doolittle Raiders” that carried out the first United States bombing attack on Japan after Pearl Harbor.

The crews that carried out this stunning mission did so with B-25 bombers, like the one in the Minnesota Wing of the CAF.

Take a listen to some of great things that the Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing does to preserve US military aviation history.
